April 2012 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

God is on the move. We see Him moving every day at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. We have victories to report and praises to shout. We are excited about what God is doing in us and through us.

Remember our Spring Banquet, April 13th, 7:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Greensboro. Call the office at 3367-292-7795 x 300 for more details and for your tickets. The tickets are $15.00 per person and table of 8 for $120.00.

I want to share with you the testimony of a recent graduate, Josh Hancock. He is a walking miracle.

My name is Joshua Hancock. For my first two years of life I lived with my mom and grandma in Red Springs, NC. My biological father was killed in Kentucky while serving in the army. When I was two years old my mother married a man named Michael. We moved to Charleston, SC, where he was serving in the navy. When I was seven years old my mother and Michael got a divorce. That's when I found out Michael wasn't my real father. It came as quite a shock for an eight year old. In spite of all this, I had a great childhood. I couldn't ask for a better mother. She raised me in church.

After high school, in the fall of 2006, I went to college. I was in a serious relationship, but after my freshman year it began to deteriorate. I had been smoking weed and drinking alcohol, which got worse after I joined a fraternity. I started dabbling in cocaine and other stuff. The next year my girl friend and I broke up and I got my first DUI.

I later decided to go into the Coast Guard. I entered boot camp and hated it from the start. I continued to drink to cover up my disgust with my situation. We traveled to many countries and I would always find cocaine. I ended up going into deep depression because I was trying to come off the cocaine. I was flown to Norfolk Naval Hospital for my drinking problem and depression. They loaded me up with prescription drugs. I abused those, mixing them with cocaine and alcohol.

In June of 2010 I was busted with cocaine and got another DUI charge. I was sent to a 28 day rehab program. I got out of the Coast Guard in January 2011. I was able to keep my drinking under control........ but only for a while. Then I got busted again for my 3rd DUI.

My mom had been telling me about Teen Challenge for a long time. She had tried to get me to look into it. She told me I had to go to Teen Challenge or find somewhere else to live.

I came to Teen Challenge broken and wanting to die. The first night I was at Teen Challenge I had to go to chapel. It was there I received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Since then I have been a changed man. Since that night I have been seeking the Lord and building a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. Without Jesus I would have no hope for a future. Because of Him, the one who saved me from my life of darkness and destruction and brought me back to light, I have a future. All praise and glory go to my Lord, Jesus Christ.

Thank you for giving to the Lord and making this testimony possible.

February 2012 Newsletter

February is known as the love month. On February 14th many will be sending flowers, candy or a card to someone they hold special in their heart. However, for many there is no card, candy or flowers; but I have good news for them. God holds us all special in His heart. It doesn't matter who you are, where you are from, or where you have been. God's love for you is beyond your comprehension. I am sharing Edgar's testimony with you this month because he is a good example of someone who has been blessed with a father's love.

It is Possible.....I grew up for the first 15 years of my life in Russia, with parents who were alcoholics, so most of my teenage life I spent in the orphanage. Being in the orphanage was not a great experience. I ended up running across town to find work for myself. I made a lot of friends who paid me money and fed me great home cooked food. I was really happy when I went back to the orphanage because I was not hungry.

My little sister was in a different orphanage. Then, she got adopted by an American family. They wanted a better life for her. When I found out she was going to the United States I was happy for her. I knew in my heart she would be better off there than where I was, because I could not provide for her. As her big brother that was really hard on me. By now our birth dad had died in a fire and no one could find our mother.

My younger brother and I were in the same orphanage. I remember having thoughts of how it would be someday. One day, the same American family that adopted my sister decided to adopt my brother and me. I was 15 years old then. I was thinking about the future. How could I have hope for anything in my life? I was wrong. The judge asked if I wanted to go. I said yes. I was okay with my brother, sister, and me being adopted. I was okay with their calling us their children, providing for us and loving us with all their heart. I knew it was real, but I did not know how it was humanly impossible. They showed us God's love, and to this day, they say it is Him.

When I left Russia I wanted to leave all my bad habits there, but I didn't. As soon as I got used to being here, I started doing some of the old things and some worse things. I had jobs, which I loved, but I got bored with them. I started showing up late and stopped caring. I was too busy looking forward to getting drunk and high. After a while my reputation at work and at home was really bad. Unfortunately, I did not care at all.

One day I got arrested. I thought to myself, "I can't do anything. It all leads to destruction and heartache." I realized I needed help. I decided to come to Teen Challenge. At Teen Challenge, I was able to be healed by God spiritually, physically and emotionally. Before Teen Challenge, there was a raging battle inside my mind. God calmed the storms in my life. Now, I know the true meaning of peace and joy. These are attributes that can only come from God. God is the leader of my life. Without Him, none of this is possible. I give God all the glory and praise for saving me and giving me a fresh start on life's journey. All things are possible with God

Will you help us with a gift to share the love of Father God with men like Edgar? They need to know it is possible to be loved and accepted. All things are possible with God!

Sincerely,

January 2012 Newsletter

NEW BEGINNINGS

Twice Blessed.......................

Let me introduce you to Jarrod Cooper. Jarrod's testimony was featured in the Teen Challenge USA newsletter in November. It was a special Thanksgiving letter. Dr. Jack Smart, Teen Challenge USA President, visited with us at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge last fall and interviewed Jarrod. I want to share the National Office's letter with you; however, I want to give special emphasis on thankfulness for what God has done in so many lives throughout 2011. We look forward to many more victories in 2012. Let's join together and watch what the Lord will do.

Here are Dr. Smart's words: "Let's express our gratitude to God for all He is and remember all the good things He has done for us. We should all think of the many good things we have received from the Lord.

Jarrod is one such thankful person. He appeared to be younger than his 36 years of age. He was polite, bright, and very respectful. As he shared his story with me, it was clear that though he knew God was working in his life, it was also painful for him to share the mistakes he had made and the consequences that came as a result. Here is his testimony." "I am from Morristown, Tennessee. I came from a peaceful, Christian home; my mother and father are still married today. We had everything we needed and most of what we wanted.

I spent most of my adolescent years involved in sports of all types. I went to a Christian school and was taught the Bible and about Jesus, but I never understood the personal relationship factor. I rebelled from the entire thing.

I initially began to get involved with alcohol. Then I began to hang out with the crowd that was involved in that lifestyle.

I got saved when I was 18 years old, a senior in high school. I had actually experienced salvation, but I never gave control of my life to Christ. I continued to be self-centered and self-seeking.

After high school I went to further my education in college. I continued to be involved with alcohol and marijuana, what you would consider gateway drugs. But up until this point I had never experienced any negative consequences from that lifestyle.

I continued to pursue athletics in college and went on to get my degree, get married and start a family. Life seemed great. I had everything I had ever dreamed of having. I had accomplished everything I wanted to achieve; I was on my way to living the life I had always envisioned.

I went on to secure a good job in the professional market all the while crediting myself for all these accomplishments rather than crediting the grace and favor of God in my life. I was an insurance agent and I was involved in several professional sales jobs. However, I continued to dabble in the gateway drugs on a weekend basis.

Then my son was born. He was my pride and joy. I loved being a father and having a son.

A couple of years later I was introduced to prescription medication which I used recreationally.

I remember absolutely loving the way it made me feel. I could continue to function, but it just numbed every emotion I had, including guilt from other sinful activities I was involved in. I felt I had found the solution to everything.

Then came my first attempt at getting sober. We were pregnant with our second child, our daughter, and I was attempting to get sober to save my family. When she was born, my attempt at sobriety became short-lived.

Over the next several years I had several encounters with law enforcement by continuously bouncing checks. Financially, I was completely going bankrupt. I bounced around from job to job, but I couldn't stay clean, so I couldn't keep a job. I went into several different programs, primarily 28 day programs and a couple of six week programs, which were focused on the 12 steps.

I had a strong desire to stay clean; I loved my family and I wanted to be there as a father and as a provider for them, but my addiction consumed me until I did not have the capability to do it on my own.

At one point, my addiction had progressed from prescription medication to harder drugs and harder methods of using the drugs (mainlining).

I overdosed and had to be resuscitated, spending a week in the hospital, almost near death.

Even that didn't wake me up. I slowly began to lose my close friends and family. It was such a dark, lonely place in life.

About two years ago, I was all alone and broken. I actually entered a program where I rekindled a relationship with Jesus Christ. I came to the realization, that for me, a 12 step program or anything I could manufacture, was not going to be enough to maintain sobriety. I had a short period of clean time in which I had regained much of the material things I had lost. But, I was living in a shallow relationship with the Lord. I did the things I needed to do to get to that point, but I had abandoned it. Fortunately, I had praying, loving parents and a family who cared a great deal for me. They were strong when I couldn't be.

They had heard of and recommended Teen Challenge. As reluctant as I was to go through another program, my options were very limited. I still had a desire to be a good father for my children. God's hand was on my life even when I didn't recognize His provision.

I made the call to Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. I told the staff of the brokenness and the dark place I was and how I needed something. Immediately, after arriving on campus, I felt a love and warm welcoming feeling I had not experienced in a long time.

A week after my arrival I fell on my face and cried out to God. I finally realized He was the only way and I just could not do life without HIM; and He met me there. He met me at my desperate, broken place.

Today, I can smile and laugh. I have a joy which is not produced or manufactured by anything within me, nor is it chemically produced. I came to realize my problem wasn't necessarily a disease, but my problem was a sin and a self-centered problem, which only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ can heal.

I feel like enough time in my life has been wasted. I have given my future to God and I look forward to everything He has for me, like it says in Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." I am grateful for the Teen Challenge ministry and everyone who is involved. I truly believe God opened the door for me to be here at this time in my life."

Jarrod's testimony is one example of lives changed through the ministry of Teen Challenge. Jarrod was blessed to be able to come to us for help, but we are blessed to be able to be part of making this ministry possible.

The National Office and Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge would like to encourage you to thank God for all He has done in your life, but also thank Him for the miraculous work He is doing in the lives of our students who are in Teen Challenge.

Thankful for Changed lives,

Ways you can help Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.........

Become a regular monthly donor

Bring your gently used merchandise and donate it to our Thrift Store.

Have a vehicle that is in running condition and has an up to date inspection? We would love to have it donated to Teen Challenge.

Include us in your trust, will or endowment.

Invite Teen Challenge to come to your church or civic group to make a presentation.

Director's Corner..................

“Happy New Year!” Seems like such a cliché. We say it often out of habit. For so many the New Year brings little hope or joy. We want to change that for as many young men as possible. We are here to offer hope, healing, and restoration through the saving power of Jesus Christ.

There is no other power on earth that can do what the power of God can do. Without the power of God we are just another program, but since we have His life changing power to share with the men, all things are possible.

I hope you enjoyed reading Jarrod’s testimony. He has been a blessing during his time at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. We have space for 30 men who will all have similar testimonies. I look forward to their change during the 2012 year. We will see many miracles.

Your monetary gifts are making it possible for us to send men like Jarrod back to their children. There are children all over the country who have their Daddy back because you decided to give to this ministry.

It is a new year, a new day and a new time. Let’s continue to do the work of the Lord and offer this HOPE, HEALING and RESTORATION to the men who come to us for help. From my heart, I thank you.

Dr. Bob

Praise Report

Our Thrift Store is doing fantastic! They have broken two sales records. One for the best sales in one week and the other for the best sales in one month.

Congratulations to our thrift store staff. They are a great team!

December 2011 Newsletter

Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge wishes you a

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

filled with God's Presence!!

Administration Office

1912 Boulevard St., Greensboro, NC 27407

Current Students.......

Re-entry Students.....

We now have five graduates (not pictured) in our Re-entry Program. We’ve been telling you about this new phase of our ministry for some time now. We opened the Re-entry Program the first of September. I am so pleased to inform you that 100% of our re-entry students have a job. They all are living what they have been taught while at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

You may wonder if all the graduates come into the Re-entry Program. The answer is, “No.” Many of our graduates are blessed to have a stable home in which they can return to, but for many that is not an option. We could no longer send our graduates out where they felt they could not live a Christian life.

Last year our graduation percentage was up 32%, with over 50% of those entering the program graduating. We give all the glory to the Lord for this. Without Him, we can do nothing. These men’s lives are changed through the life changing power of God.

If you wonder whether your contributions are significant, just look at these men. I am sure if you could sit down and talk with any of them, they would be first to thank you for your prayers, your financial support and your friendship to Teen Challenge. Today, we take time out to express our thanks to you and we want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Because He came we have this glorious season.

Director's Corner.....

In our October newsletter I appealed to you to give $10.00. Many of you responded. We heard from donors we had not heard from in a long time. I want you to know how much we appreciate you taking the time to read our newsletters, pray for our ministry, our staff and our students, and respond to our need. Today, I would like to ask you to consider doing a special Christmas donation gift.

As our economy struggles, so do most ministries. Teen Challenge, like many ministries, has been facing some very tight cash flow. We have two buildings that need new roofs; we need a lot of updates to Dorm 2 to make it more energy efficient, including a new hot water heater. Can you imagine what it takes to care for up to 30 students, 24/7; maintain six buildings, situated on 11 acres, and five vehicles? Plus we have to pay salaries, insurance, utilities and the list goes on.

God told us He birthed this ministry and He will take care of what He has birthed. I believe that with all my heart, but I know God uses people; ordinary people, like you and me. I know God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. You are part of God’s plan for Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. David Wilkerson once said, “God does not have problems, He has plans.” Yes, God has a plan and I believe you are a part of it.

Thank you for your gift to Teen Challenge. Merry Christmas……...Jesus truly is the reason for this season.

End of Year Donations must be post marked by December 31, 2011 to receive credit for 2011. This is an IRS regulation.

                          A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

(Andrew's before

and after Pictures)

My name is Andrew Walker. My life has had many obstacles and many blessings. I would like to share how I have come to this point in my life.

I was the middle child. My parents were divorced and my mom had remarried. My childhood was a struggle. My step-father was an abusive man, physically and emotionally, but never sexually. We simply did not have any male role models and were not taught any life skills.

I developed resentment and anger early in life. I craved attention, so I reached out to other male figures, but was always let down because they could never meet my standards or needs. Over time I learned I could create attention, but it was always from the wrong people. I was accepted by those who indulged themselves in smoking and drinking alcohol. This new way of life was very gratifying because it allowed me to numb the pain, anxiety and stress of life. For a teen who felt he had no self worth, this was more than appealing. My resentments toward my parents turned to bitterness. I completely disregarded any authority figure or parental direction.

At sixteen my mother was fed up and sent me to live with my father, whom I did not have any relationship with at the time. I continued my same behaviors but found myself with more freedom. Three high schools later, I dropped out of school. I did earn a GED. This allowed me more freedom and independence, which in turn opened doors to experiment with harder drugs and reckless relationships.

After burning all my bridges in Virginia I bought a bus ticket to my hometown in Illinois. Being absent from my hometown for two years created a mystique around the man I had become from hard living in the city.

For the next six years I immersed myself in a life of drugs and crime. My way of life cost me more than I could have ever imagined. I lost relationships with the ones who loved me the most. I lost time and everyday freedoms due to time spent in jails and prison.

In 2008, after my release from Graham Penitentiary, I ran once more to North Carolina to begin my life again. While living with my brother, I met the woman who is now the mother of my son. My own desire to be a good daddy to Wyatt could not overshadow the overwhelming resentments that were still buried deep within me. I tried everything I could possibly imagine to suppress the addict that seemed to claw his way out more times than not. I finally submitted to secular programs, but no matter how well I did, relapse was always guaranteed. More than once in my life, I felt I had lost everything. Not until I was sitting in my second halfway house in Charlotte, NC, physically sick, emotionally and spiritually dead, did I feel hopeless enough to commit suicide.

Finally, after hitting the bottom, I cried out to God with a desperate plea to save my life. Within 24 hours my brother was knocking on my door with an offer to attend a faith based discipleship program, Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, that could help free me from the chains of addiction. I accepted my brothers help and entered Teen Challenge.

Now I am completely surrendered to Christ and I'm overwhelmed by the renewal of my spirit. I can see evidence of restoration taking place in my life and I know only through God is any of this possible. Now, I cheerfully continue my journey in Christ.

Andrew is enrolled in our Re-entry Program. He has a good job, sees his son regularly and is strong in his walk with the Lord. Praise God!

Director's Corner...........

On November 1st I will have been the Executive Director of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge for one full year. It is amazing how fast a year can pass us by. We praise God for many victories throughout the past year. Our beds are full, our Marriage and Restoration Program is still going strong, the new Re-entry Program, Aftercare Department and Mentorship Program are all going great. We still have programs. What a blessing from God to be able to offer such wonderful opportunities to our students and graduates.

God wants us to be obedient to what He asks of us. We have felt God leading us in all of these areas, and we have been obedient to follow Him and step out in faith. Each of these accomplishments represent a lot of time, commitment, hard work and finances. I like what Mel Reich, our First Vice-President, said at our last meeting, "God didn't part the Red Sea two weeks before the Israelites arrived. He parted the Red Sea when they were at the river bank." God is an on-time God. We trust Him every day to meet the needs at Teen Challenge. It costs us $2000.00 per day to run this ministry. We have been running short by about 35% each month. Please pray about what God would have you give to help meet the needs. God bless you!

Pilot Mountain Trip

It was a beautiful Fall day so a short trip to Pilot Mountain seemed like the right thing to do. We loaded up our buses and headed for the mountains. It was a great opportunity for those who were able to go with us. Four of the students stayed back at the center, but for those who were able to come, it was a great afternoon of enjoying God's handiwork.

We have been especially blessed this month. A local church provided tickets for the entire student body and staff to attend the premiere showing of the new movie "Courageous." After the movie we took our tickets for a free sandwich at Chick-fil-A. What a treat. Then, a local teacher donated tickets for us to attend a symphony at UNCG. It was a great opportunity. Several of the guys had never been to a symphony. Last Friday one of our volunteers sponsored all the men to attend a pancake dinner. Believe me, she got her money's worth, the way our men eat.

The community coming together and thinking of Teen Challenge is such a blessing. These were opportunities many of the men have never had. We want to thank everyone who helps provide for this ministry. We pray you will be blessed in return.

Fall Appreciation Banquet.......Coming Up Soon!

Our Fall Appreciation Banquet will be held at Occasions Restaurant, 286 E. Front Street, in Burlington, NC, Monday, November 21st at 7:00 p.m. The tickets are $13.50 per person and a table for ten can be purchased for $135.00.

If you are unable to attend you may still send a donation to help offset the expenses of the banquet or to help sponsor our students. Please purchase your tickets as soon as possible to help us get an accurate count for the restaurant.

If you need more information please call Lorna at 336-292-7795 ext. 300. We look forward to a great banquet. You will not want to miss this banquet. We will have our GPTC choir singing and powerful testimonies. JOIN US!

Have you ever asked yourself, "Where has the time gone?" I find myself amazed that the holidays are fast approaching us. It is a time of excitement and a time for us to thank God for all His provisions throughout 2011.

Following is the testimony of Jacob Smith. Jacob wants to share with you why he is thankful for Teen Challenge, for your support of this ministry and for all Christ has done in his life.

My name is Jacob Edward Smith. I grew up in Tallahassee, FL, in a very good, Christian home. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in elementary school. Once I went to middle school I decided the way I would deal with anyone who would pick on me for my speech impediment or my learning disabilities was to fight them. So the third day of my sixth grade year I was suspended for a week for getting into a fight with an eighth grader who made fun of the way I talked. At this point in time I didn't realize that I had a serious depression and anger problem.

Then in the eighth grade my parents realized that something wasn't right. My mom made an appointment with a doctor and the test came back that I had clinical depression and I was actually suicidal. My parents tried to help me.

Once I got into high school my addiction to drugs and alcohol became out of control. I found myself getting high before class every day and then just skipping school all the time. I found myself at a young age hanging out with older guys so on the weekends I would stay the night at their house, go to different parties with them, and try new drugs. But the drug that I knew was going to be the death of me was ecstasy. I fell in love with the way it made me feel from the very first time I did it. I continued to do ecstasy until I came into the Teen Challenge.

During the time I spent at Teen Challenge God delivered me from anger, clinical depression, and drug and alcohol addictions. I have found the love of Jesus in my heart. He has truly changed me from the inside out. He has given me a passion to work with youth and use my testimony to advance His kingdom. For all the things that have changed in my life I give all the praise and glory to God, and thank Him for making me into a new creation. Paul says in II Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore if any man should be in Christ he is a new creation the old has gone and the new has come."

Jacob graduated several months ago and went to work at Tallahassee Teen Challenge for an internship. He came back to Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge and is now one of our dorm staff members. He is a true blessing!

We send our letters to approximately 3200 people each month. If each person would give just $10.00 it would give us one of our largest income months. Would you please consider what you can give to this ministry? You may not have given in a long time, but can send $10.00 or maybe you can give more. Please pray about it and send your donation today. God bless you and thank you for your continued prayers and financial blessings to Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

Sincerely,

                              NEW BEGINNINGS

He Loves Me

I am elated. The Lord has been so incredibly good to me. Even through my most gruesome pride, Jesus has loved me. I am unworthy of this grace. Why should I have had the chance to flee the bondage I was in? Why did not the Lord leave me to my flesh, to the self-corrupting activity I was indulging in? Why was my heart so tormented by the spirit and moved to take drastic measure to repent? Because, He loves me. He loves me. He loves me. He loves me.

I know He does, for His chastisement has been firm, His discipline has been effective, His hand has been heavy upon my back. As a perfect Father graciously tends to his obstinate child so the Lord has wrapped me up in His arms with relentless adoration. Nothing I can do will ever loosen His infinite, omnipotent grip, for I am bound to Him, a slave to righteousness.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. The blood of Christ is cool refreshment to my dry raspy throat, His torn and bruised flesh is recourse and succor to these brittle, broken bones. The cross and great sacrifice of the Lamb of the slaughter speaks righteousness, hope, peace, joy and happiness for me. I am elated.

Let Christ be known; let His glory and His accomplishment reverberate through the hearts, souls and minds of everyone everywhere. Let the gospel of salvation and the great price that was paid, go forth to every tribe, to every nation, and to every tongue. Let Jesus teach and heal every affliction, disease and ailment of all the people of the earth. In all things let Christ be preached and let Christ be preeminent. This is my prayer, this is my story and this is my song. Amen.

These are the words Keaton McPherson shared at his graduation service from Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Keaton is doing great and faithfully serving the Lord. Please read on to find his recent testimony. Keaton sent it to us this month. What a blessing to be part of the restoration of another young man.

Director's Corner......

It seems like it was just yesterday when I was bit by the frigid winds of winter. However, lately we have been enduring temperatures in the 90’s and breaking 100. I once again find myself praying for those who have no shelter from the elements, those who only find refuge wherever they are fortunate enough to tuck themselves away.

Although we witness the pain and effects of other hardships, we know we have shelter in the arms of the Lord. We are able to offer hope and change through Jesus Christ. Those who come to us may not be suffering from the natural elements, but they are suffering from the result of addictions and sin. The only hope any of us have from sin is the saving grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Some wonder how so many young people can be addicted to drugs and alcohol. I continue to thank the Lord that I am able to say, “There but for the grace of God go I.” We are not any different or any better than those we serve. Romans 3:10 tells us that no one is righteous, no not one of us. Verse 23 says that we all have sinned and come short of God’s glory.

Will you join me in praising God for His provision and saving grace. God bless each of you for your faithfulness in partnering with Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

Keaton’s Testimony:

My life has been characterized by drugs, sex and alcohol. I’m not one to think that there are any connections between the three, or that there is some “slippery-slope” formula to them, as some claim. I simply believe what the Bible says: “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshipped and served the creature rather than the creator” (Rom 1:25). What was the lie? The lie was that I, like Adam in the Garden, sought to live my life apart from God. I wanted to be God rather than submit to his perfect will for my life. I asserted myself as Lord over my own life, and the consequences were costly. So when I say I don’t believe in a “slippery-slope” with addictions, all I’m saying is that there was no slope; I just had a wicked heart. A wicked heart is all we are left with once we dismantle ourselves from the benevolent God who designed us to be thus united to Him. If we lose God, we lose all benevolence; there is no goodness nor righteousness. And that is where my story begins.

A life set apart from God, David says, is where every person in this fallen world starts out: “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). Early on I remember doing anything to get my way. I would lie to my parents and play them against each other for just about anything I needed. I was careful never to come across as devious, always diligent to cover up my deeds with a smiley, charming face. This was the beginning of the development of the two people I would maintain as myself for many years to come; one was the outstanding-me, the one everyone knew, and the other was the secret-me, the darkness in me, the depths of which even I could not see.

After years of secret sins and debauchery, my adolescence spent addicted to pornography and late teen years addicted to sex and alcohol, I crossed the line that would uncover it all. Before dabbling in Meth, I maintained a façade that was sufficient enough to deceive anyone. I was a varsity basketball player, held a 4.0 GPA, and even had a cute girlfriend whom I loved and adored, so my alternate lifestyle was in no way detectable. However, Meth had a hold on me. I could use on Friday, stay up until Sunday, sleep and then go to class on Monday. I kept this up for a solid year. I kept up the appearance of well-being, no one could interpose themselves in my life. If I kept everyone at an arms-length, they would never be able to peer over the edge of my heart into the eternal abyss of emptiness, and my secrets would be safe.

I met Erin my junior year of College, at the height of my drug abuse. She was a Christian. I thought I would turn her to the dark side. I never knew she would introduce me to the Savior, and my life would be changed drastically. She and I dated for about two years, and this resulted in my conversion to the faith. It was then the Holy Spirit entered into the dark abyss of my heart, breathed light and life into it, and showed me the glory of Christ and salvation. I began to pursue Christ with everything I had in me. It was the first time that the two faces I had maintained for so long began to waste away, and a new face began to emerge, the face of Christ.

So how does Teen Challenge come into the mix? If I got saved two years before entering into the program, why did I come into it? I was in desperate need of a vacation from the world, to be sheltered for a time from the elements of Satan. I needed a place where I could regain my breath, grow strong, and enter back into the world when I was ready. Teen Challenge proved to be that very refuge. Throughout the months following my conversion, I undoubtedly had a new heart, Godly desires and affections, and a will to obey His precepts, but I was continually falling back into sin. I continually relapsed every three to four months. After my final relapse in July of 2010, I had had enough of the vicious cycle. I was ready to kill sin before it killed me. I made the toughest decision of my life; I called Wayne at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

That was over a year ago now, hard to believe. I just celebrated my first year sober, and I’m astounded at the work Jesus has done in my life. Today I enjoy my life free from drugs. God used Teen Challenge to help me overcome that battle. I have a wonderful church through which God has provided me with many godly men to counsel me in life. I started a nursing home ministry and I’m currently training to lead a grace group at our church. I am making plans to attend seminary school after I complete my BA at the local university.

Life is by no means easy; Jesus never said it would be. I face many trials and temptation every day, and, if I’m honest, I’ve failed miserably at times. The war wages on, Satan thirsts for my soul, and my rebellious nature tries to concede to him, but I realize that it is not about my diligence or effort in the battle. Apart from grace, I am nothing. It is the Lord who protects me: “The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and coming in from this time forth and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7, 8). I look forward to seeing Jesus and worshipping Him for all eternity; it is my hope and my joy. I look forward to that day, and that hope preserves me. Amen.

August 2011 Newsletter

New Beginnings.......

My name is Daniel Cline. I am 24 years old. I was born and raised in Asheville, NC by two wonderful parents. My older brother and I had an awesome life. My mom and dad did whatever they could to give us what we needed and wanted.

I did well in school and never really struggled. I loved sports and played as many as I could. I played football, basketball, baseball, soccer and wrestled. My favorite was football. However, I started putting sports before school and that's when my grades suffered.

During high school I began to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Little did I know I was planting a seed of destruction which would take root and try to destroy my life and my future.

After I graduated high school, I moved to Wilmington, NC, to start a new chapter in my life. I went to Cape Fear Community College and also worked. Everything was going great, but living on my own at 18 had its temptations. The seed I had planted in high school was growing in a plant. I began smoking weed daily and drinking whenever I couldn't smoke. I lived like that for two years.

One day at a carwash I met a beautiful woman named Jordan. Long story short, she is now my wife and the mother of my two beautiful daughters.

After my first daughter was born, my wife told me she wanted me to stop smoking weed, so I did. I still wanted to alter my mind, so I turned to a legal drug, alcohol. I began to drink off and on during the weekends or at parties, never thinking about it. This continued for a couple of months. Soon it wasn't just here and there, but it turned into every weekend. The first stop I would make before I got home from work would be the ABC store.

My wife started to notice a pattern in the way I was drinking. It threw up some red flags. My drinking continued and was getting worse. I was now drinking every night after work. Jordan told me I needed to watch how much I was drinking or it could turn into a serious problem in the future. I told her not to worry about a thing, I could stop whenever I wanted to.

My drinking was like a snowball at the top of a hill, it started out small but when it started rolling it began to grow and get bigger, gaining speed so fast it was now out of control and going to destroy anything in its path.

Before I came into Teen Challenge I was at the worst point in my life. I was drinking hard liquor every morning before work. I would continue drinking though out the day, then come home and continue drinking until I would pass out. My wife demanded I stop, but I was too far gone. I couldn't stop.

Jordan came to me and gave me the number for Teen Challenge and told me to call them. I made the call and admitted I needed help.

I was accepted into the program at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. I came to Teen Challenge thinking I was coming to get off drugs. But I soon realized I came to start a relationship with Jesus, and that's exactly what I did.

I stand before you today a new man in Christ Jesus, a man on fire for God and devoted to being the spiritual leader of my family. I thank Teen Challenge for what they have done for me, but I know all the glory goes to God and the works of His hand. Teen Challenge is a vessel God works through to bring troubled men to Christ.

I thank God and Teen Challenge for what they have done for me and my family. My life is restored, my marriage is restored and my salvation is restored. Thank you my heavenly Father.

Daniel is pursuing a career in law enforcement. We are so proud of this young family. We were privileged to be part of their restoration. Daniel and Jordan participated in our Marriage and Restoration Program. God has been faithful and we rejoice together for His mighty deliverance in Daniel's life.

   A Message from Dr. Bob........

Miracles happen every day. We see them at home, at work and when we least expect them. We have prayed for many different kinds of miracles in our lives, but the greatest miracle of all is the salvation of a soul.

At Teen Challenge we rescue souls. Some come to us with no idea or comprehension of who Christ is. Others come to us and have been raised in a loving Christian home and attended church throughout their earlier years. Some come to Teen Challenge and have an idea of who God is, but they have never experienced Him personally. Whichever category a man falls into when they enter the program, they are given the same opportunity. The opportunity to meet Jesus, ask Him into their heart and then be taught how to serve and love God for the rest of their life.

We have had several of our men graduate recently. It is always with great anticipation we have our graduation ceremonies. I am thrilled to present them with their graduation certificate, share my personal thoughts about them individually and give them a book out of my personal library or one purchased especially for them. The presence of the Lord is felt so real at the graduations. Each young man who completes the program is a miracle

Yes, God still performs miracles....I see one every graduation day.

    Re-entry Program Launches

Our goal is to open our new Re-entry Program the first part of September. We want to provide a residential Re-entry Program located on our existing campus. This program will foster an environment of continued spiritual growth and self-sufficiency for program graduates from our primary program.

Norm Oliveau will move from Dorm 1 Supervisor to Re-entry Supervisor. Graduates who require more support in their journey toward successful living now have the option of applying to our Re-entry Program. This program will be located in our second residential dormitory and will be self-sufficient within the framework of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

The Re-entry Program provides a safe, long-term transition for our graduates, who need a helping hand and not a hand-out. This also goes hand in hand with our Aftercare Program. We expect to close the relapse gap through this highly structured program.

Please keep this new venture in your prayers. Many of the students now in the program are excited about the possibility of entering the Re-entry Program. We are trusting God for much needed grant funds to do some renovating of the dormitory facility and hope to continue improving on the structure as we also continue to improve on the success of our graduates.

We are stepping out in faith for this program. Faith in God, faith in each other and faith in our donors. Together we will see great things done for the Kingdom of God.

Two words that never grow old are "thank you". We say them sometimes out of habit and don't put much thought behind them and other times we say them with excitement when we receive a special gift or message. However, they are two words we never want to forget to say to our faithful partners.

One of our volunteers, Jack Robinson, comes in on a regular basis to make phone calls and let you know how much we appreciate your faithfulness. You may have already gotten a call from Jack. Many of you have expressed your appreciation for his call. He loves to visit with you, pray with you and share how much we appreciate you. If you have not already been contacted, you may be soon.

So if you haven't heard it lately, let us take a moment and say "Thank You!"

Hi, my name is Lee Butler and I am forty years old. I was born in Detroit Michigan. I have ten brothers and sisters. My mother passed away when I was three years old. My father was an alcoholic, so my grandmother asked my father to stop drinking and take care of his kids. He said he wouldn't, so she took on the responsibility of raising ten kids after raising the ten kids she already had.

All my aunts and uncles drank exposing me to alcohol at the early age of 4 years old. My uncles would put beer in my bottle to make me go to sleep, relieving the responsibility of having to take care of me. After a few years my grandmother made the decision she couldn't raise ten more kids in the city. Things were getting out of hand, so she decided to move back to her mother's house in Bassett, VA.

Growing up we didn't have a lot, but we had what we needed. MyGrandmother cared deeply and did a great job raising us.

I can remember, when I was about 12 years old, my grandmother would have a fish fry on Saturdays to make extra money. My job was to take sandwiches to the local pool hall. For my tip they would give me some of their beer or liquor. I loved this. I looked forward to Saturdays all throughout middle school, knowing I could have a drink and not get in trouble. As I got older, I began to drink recreationally with friends. After I graduated high school I went straight to work to help my grandmother pay the bills. I worked at a local furniture factory. I quickly discovered it was expected to drink in the morning, at lunch, and after work. This was the beginning of the end.

I met a young lady and soon she was pregnant. We had a little girl and this all hit me very fast. I knew the responsible thing to do was to quit drinking and be the father I never had. I made that decision. Within two weeks the pressure was too great and I found myself back in the grips of addiction. Now, I lived a double life to hide my problems from those closest to me. I was becoming an excellent liar, thief, manipulator, and was unfaithful to the ones I loved. What I wanted I got, and nobody could stop me.

Life carried on and I was convinced I had it together. Two years slowly went by and we found out we were going to have a son. Again, I wanted to do the responsiblething and stop drinking. I checked myself into a 28 day program. I completed this with a renewed energy and take on life. I was finally going to be a real father to my kids. I was taking care of my family and God blessed me with a great job. I quickly moved up the corporate ladder becoming a supervisor of one of the largest grocery chains in Seattle, WA. Life went smoothly for a while, until one Thursday I had an exceedingly hard day at work. I battled back and forth in my head, but told myself I could drink just one beer. That one beer would be the key to my downfall. I was quickly out of control. I was drinking so much that when my kids and their mother left me, it didn't faze me. I had become what I never wanted to be.....my father.

I stayed in Seattle while my family left me and moved to Virginia. For the next 15 years I slowly killed myself. My addiction grew larger than I could handle. I missed my family and decided to move back to Virginia, in with my sister. I was still drinking and running from my problems . I remember waking up hung-over and asking the Lord to restore purpose and meaning to my life. God was quick to answer my prayer. That day a friend came to see me, telling me to get some help. She told me about Teen Challenge. I filled out the paper work, and sent it to Wayne Duesberry. I was accepted into the program and God began a miracle in my life. He restored me and gave me a new heart, filling me up with eternal peace, joy, and love.

I thank God for the staff here and the wisdom they have shown me. For the first time I am complete. God has saved me from destruction and death. I would like to close with a song we sing in choir. It says "I'm not going BACK, I'm moving ahead, my past is over; in YOU, all things are made new." I want to thank Jesus for the work He has done in me and what He will continue to do. Amen.

Since Lee's graduation in April we asked him to come on staff and be part of the team helping those who come to us with similar needs and addictions. Lee is a great addition to our staff and we look forward to sharing many victories with him.
Please keep Lee and all our staff in your prayers as we diligently do the work of the Lord.

Director's Corner......

My wife, Debbie, and I had the privilege of attending the memorial service for David Wilkerson, which was held May 14th, at the Times Square Church in New York City. It was an honor to be part of the thousands in attendance. We sat with other Teen Challenge directors from across the country and around the world.

We laughed, we cried and we were challenged as memories of “Brother Dave”, Dad, father-in-law, pastor and friend were shared with the congregation. I told Debbie I felt as though I had been re-commissioned into the ministry. Being reminded of our beginnings and the faithfulness of one man brought a renewed purpose and vision to life. It was good to be reminded that our obedience to the Lord is more important than all the sacrifices we may make.

My desire is to be obedient to whatever God asks of me. As we labor together to see young men rescued from the grip of the enemy, we will continue to trust the Lord, lean on Him and let Him direct our paths. What He calls us to do, He will provide all we need to fulfill it.

I personally thank you for being obedient to the Lord in your giving to Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. May God richly bless you for your faithfulness!

Sunday School Class Donates Over $4,000.00

Challenged by their Sunday School teacher, this class of young people from Glenwood Friends Church, raised over $4,000.00 for Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. What a lesson for all of us. Their teacher told them if they collected enough pennies to stretch out for one mile it would be 800 dollars. After one week the class brought in one mile. Excited, the teacher challenged them to collect more miles. They took her challenge to heart and did an amazing job. We challenge more people to start collecting miles for Teen Challenge. Thanks young people. You are a true blessing!

                      PRAYER LADIES

So many people comment how they feel the presence of the Lord when they come onto our property. We feel it’s because we are covered with prayer.

For the past 25 years, the ladies prayer group has been a vital part of the ministry of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. The purpose of the prayer group is to pray for the needs of the students and staff. When we organized the first prayer group in 1986, we had about a dozen women attending. Our numbers have dwindled for various reasons. Because of the decrease in numbers there isn’t always someone available to come every week.

The Prayer Team meets each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Teen Challenge Chapel. Would you consider being part of this vital ministry. If you are interested give Lorna a call at 336-292-7795 x 300. We truly believe the results of this ministry is because of prayer. You can be part of this ongoing ministry.

June 2011 Newsletter

                                          June 2011

Shortly after coming on staff at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge, God put in my heart to begin an After Care Program. We want to do a good job of following up with our graduates. We want to be there for them, continue to mentor them, and make sure they remember we are here for them.

As I prayed about this need and sought the direction of the Lord, God sent us a wonderful volunteer by the name of Dick Blackley. I have asked Dick to share his testimony with you.

Hello, my name is Dick Blackley and I have the privilege of serving Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge as the newly appointed "After Care Coordinator".

My wife, Judi, and I have been happily married for 48 years and are the parents of six children, three of which are adopted. The Lord called Judi and me to service in 1980, shortly after we were both born again. The Lord's directive to us was: "Grow my children up". Before a year had elapsed, the Lord had put on our hearts to become foster parents. This was the experience of a lifetime. After twenty years of hands-on experience, we both had a better appreciation of the many things which can "mess up" a child's life. That experience continues to fuel our desire to assist, in any way we can, in "Growing up God's Family".

As for my professional background, I have been a practicing pharmacist for 50 years. I have witnessed first-hand the harm that can afflict prescription drug abusers. Over the years God has been fine tuning my insight into both those who are physically ill and those who are spiritually ill. Desiring continued growth in this area, I have furthered my education through additional study and by completing a course in pastoral counseling. I am firmly convinced God has the answers to all our infirmities.

Psalm 25 has been a personal reminder to me that the Lord will guide me, teach me and instruct me in the path He chooses. Once discovered, I am to commit to His direction and marvel at the awesome work He will do. Right now, His work for me is here at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge and I'm expecting marvelous things.

If you were a student or are a family member of a student, would you please contact Dick and let him know how you are doing, let him pray with you and get acquainted with you? We want to get in contact with every former student we can. You can reach Dick at 336-292-7795 x 314 or online at dblackley@gpteenchallenge.com.

Please keep Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge in your prayers and your budget as we reach out to hurting young men trapped in addictions. It takes a lot of man hours to care for a dorm full of men and continue to reach out to former students. With God's strength we will continue to see more victories won. We thank God for people like Dick, and people like you who give of their time, talents and finances. God bless you and thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob Harman
Executive Director

David Wilkerson with the Lord

Rev. David Wilkerson

May 19, 1931 - April 27, 2011

Friend to the outcast and hurting. Fearless witness of Christ's saving power. Passionate voice for God to His church. Tender supporter of widows, orphans and the poor. Spiritual father to generations upon generation, from the destitute to the powerful, from adults to teenagers, from loved ones to strangers from every walk of life. Our beloved Founder of Teen Challenge is home with the Lord, as a result of a tragic automobile accident on April 27, 2011.

For over six decades David Wilkerson served the Lord faithfully in ministry. He served with an unwavering belief in God's love for every human being and a relentless desire to reach them.

"Brother Dave," as he liked to be called, was known literally to millions for his unlimited faith. He believed God could change the lives of gang members and transform the most desperate drug addicts-and the Lord did.

David Ray Wilkerson was born May 19, 1931, in Hammond, Indiana, to a line of devoted Pentecostal preachers. After he was ordained in the Assemblies of God, he married the love of his life-Gwendolyn Carosso, who would serve beside him in ministry for 57 years.

In 1958 he traveled from his small church in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, to reach out to gang members on trial in New York City. "He had never been to New York, he had certainly never met a gang member or drug addict," according to his brother, Don Wilkerson. "He just came here, with his simplicity, his naiveté, whatever you want to call it, and he changed people's lives."

Out of that bold move was born the Teen Challenge ministry. The ministry became well known through the book, The Cross and the Switchblade. The ministry has grown to more than 1,000 centers in the United States and 80 other countries. Brother Dave served God's purpose in his generation. He preached with uncompromising passion and relentless grace.

Because of the great need for more Teen Challenge centers throughout the country Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge was started in 1975, in Burlington, NC. Since then we moved from Burlington, NC to Greensboro, NC where we have seen countless men come into a personal relationship with the Lord and set free from their addiction.

David Wilkerson's passing is a deep personal loss for many. Yet we rejoice knowing he lived life to the very fullest, in obedient devotion to God and a radical love for Jesus. His desire was to be like Jesus. I pray that is your desire today.

Thank you for your continued support of Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Please keep the Wilkerson family and the Teen Challenge family in your prayers.

God bless you and thank you.

April 2011 Newsletter

              New Beginnings

I Had To Die, So I could Live

My name is Brent Sellers. I started rebelling against my mom and dad at an early age. I started drinking alcohol at the age of thirteen. I involved myself with parties and all night witchcraft. I was living with anyone who would take me in. I stole my first car at the age of sixteen.

Having no authority in my life and no respect for the law, I ended up in prison before I was twenty-one. When I got out, I was outrunning the law and driving with a revoked license. I had my license revoked 27 times and had three DWI's. I was on my own and no one could tell me anything, not even God.

I was in and out of relationships, gaining everything just to lose it all. The only thing I cared about was myself.

I chased being high for ten years. I couldn't stop taking pills because the withdrawals were so bad. I would spend hours in the E.R. complaining about something, just so I could get pain medicine. I was being given 180 pills per month and running out the first week. It was so bad I began to rob and steal to support my habit. I went into deep depression and wanted to die. I eventually began using crack cocaine and it was all over.

I ended up homeless and eating out of bubble gum machines. I didn't shower for weeks. I was finally caught and taken to jail. When I took my socks off my skin came off with them. I had 27 felonies. I received two sentences of 11-14 months in prison.

While I was in prison I began to read the Bible. In the book of John, chapter 14 the words really touched me. I began to seek God more and more, but my flesh was still in control. I had not fully surrendered my life to Christ. After my release from prison, I fell back into sin, but only for a season. I came to my senses and removed myself from the circumstances I was in. A friend, who I met in church, before I went to prison, came to me and told me about Teen Challenge. She said it would help me have a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

Coming to Teen Challenge gave me hope, but I learned something the first week I was there. I was a believer when I came to Teen Challenge, but I had not surrendered my all. I had built my house on the wrong foundation. I was still struggling with pride, hurt, anger and self-control. I prayed by my bed one night and told the Lord I couldn't do it. The Lord told me, just as He had to die for me, I had to die to self so He could live in me. Now, I am alive in Christ. I now know who I am. I am a son of the most high God!

It has been a tough road, but my past life could never compare to the peace I now have through Jesus Christ. My hope is in Christ and Him alone. I thank God for Teen Challenge and all the staff. Jesus Christ, through Teen Challenge, was a wrecking ball on my old house and He has become the foundation on which I am building my new house.

He is my Lord and Savior and I thank Him for giving me His grace for a new life.

                            ****************

Let us introduce to you, as of April 9th, 2011, Mr. & Mrs. Brent Sellers. To God Be The Glory, Great Things He Hath Done!!

Brent has served on staff since his graduation in August of 2010. He has a deep love for God and a passion to see other men experience the life changing power of Jesus Christ.

You can usually hear Brent singing praises to God as he walks about our campus doing the work of the ministry. He is a true blessing and gift from God.

**********************

Director's Corner......Growing Giants

A Message from Dr. Bob

You may have noticed in the past several newsletters I have been featuring the testimonies of graduates who are now working on staff here at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

I am doing this for two reasons. First, since I am new within the past year, I want to publish the testimonies of men I know to be living successful Christian lives. The men working with me, I see on a daily basis and I know them to be dedicated men of God. I feel confident sharing their testimonies with you. The second reason is I want you to know about these men who are becoming giants in the faith.

I have the best staff any director could ask for. It has been a true blessing to work along side of men who love Jesus and have a desire to disciple other young men.

The Word tells us to go and make disciples and baptize them.

I had the great privilege of baptizing in water six of our students during the month of February. It was an awesome time and we all rejoiced before the Lord.

What a privilege it is to witness the men who come to us broken and in despair being put into the Potter's hands and remade into new vessels, full of love for the Lord.

Their decision to follow the Lord in water baptism is a great example of their desire to change their lives and live for the Savior.

I will continue to share the testimonies of our graduates, men who came into Teen Challenge hurting and full of despair, but have become Giants in the Kingdom.

**************************

THE CROSSES OF CALVARY

Easter reminds us of the crucifixion. It also reminds us of new life in Christ. Luke 23 records three crosses at Calvary. Each one tells a story.

Jesus, the Son of God, occupied the middle cross. He was without sin. The middle cross was a place where the worst criminals were hanged. Christ Jesus, the man on the middle cross, died for the sins of the world. He was innocent. He died to save us from our sins.

A thief occupied the cross on the left. We do not know his crime. It was punishable by death. He cursed Jesus, "Save yourself and us if you are the Christ". He wanted to be saved from the cross. We see no repentance. He was selfish. This man died in his sins.

A thief also occupied the cross on the right. He deserved death. However, he confessed his sins as he was dying. Jesus heard his prayer. We see true faith and belief in Christ. The thief saw Jesus, an innocent man, who suffered for the sins of the world. This man died and was saved from his sins.

At Teen Challenge, we can relate to the cross. We all deserved punishment for our sins. Thank God, we repented, and asked forgiveness. Life and joy flooded our souls. New life springs forth every day at Teen Challenge.

There were three men and three crosses at Calvary. One was the Savior, one was lost, and one was saved. When presented with the savior we all must choose. There is new life for all who ask. It starts at the cross.

*********************************

February 2011 Letter

February 2011

Dear Friends of Teen Challenge,

I am writing today with joy in my heart. I have living proof that God is still changing lives at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Listen to Wayne's testimony. Wayne graduated several years ago and is now the Intake Coordinator for Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Wayne's story is different from everyone else and yet, in many ways, it is so much like everyone who comes to us.

"My name is Wayne Duesberry. My parents adopted me at the age of six month and raised me in a godly home. At the age of eighteen, I began using LSD, cocaine and speed. Life got crazy, I got crazy. Once, a couple of plain clothes police officers approached me in my car. I tried to run. An hour later I was caught and charged with attempted murder on a police officer. I was given five years probation and released into the custody of my parents.

At the age of twenty-five I was introduced to crack cocaine, the drug that would eventually bring a total ruin to my life. I lost everything: jobs, cars, home and finally my wife.

Twenty years of drug abuse was slowly killing and destroying me. There was no hope left for me. God couldn't love someone like me. Death was better than my miserable life. Why not just kill myself? I attempted suicide by hanging myself with a chain. Can you believe it? The chain broke!

God broke the chain. He also intervened through my sister. She took me to Dare Challenge at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I later transferred to Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge in Greensboro.

I have received God's love and forgiveness. I have learned to love and forgive myself. I don't need pills to kill the pain anymore. Jesus gives me eternal life, joy and peace! The answer is found in a loving, personal relationship with a man whose name is Jesus Christ! Jesus broke all my chains."

Believe me, housing, feeding, clothing, training and providing full time staff, counselors and teachers for 24 students like Wayne is a big expense. Men like Wayne need to know there are people who care. They need to know there is someone like you, praying and supporting Teen Challenge.

I urge you to write a check to Teen Challenge for $100, $50, $20 or whatever God is asking you to do.

Thank you for caring and thank you for sharing.

Blessings,

Dr. Robert J. Harman,

Executive Director

January 2011 Newsletter

New Beginnings

On the Outside Looking In......

My name is Chris Edwards. I'm forty three years old and was born and raised in Durham, NC. I am one of four boys. I had a great childhood. We were not given everything we wanted, but we had everything we needed. As a child I loved all types of sports, but excelled in baseball. I started playing when I was five and to this day I still enjoy it. I was raised in a Christian home with a mother and father who would go to any lengths to make sure their four sons felt loved. Things weren't always easy for me, or anyone else in my family, but we always seemed to pull through.

Right now, I'm the proud father of three beautiful daughters. I'm married to my high school sweetheart, Kim. We currently reside inRaleigh, NC. We built our first home here. The Lord has truly been good to me. I now have a relationship with Kim that grows stronger every day. He has taught me the true meaning of unconditional love and given me everything I asked for and more. I cannot think of any better way to give back to the Lord then by sharing my testimony of how God's grace and mercy can save that which was once lost. I have a strong desire to show hope to other lost men. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future." There are many men caught in the grips of addiction, isolation, and destruction which often leads to suicide. Not long ago, I was one of these lost men.

I had a twenty five year span of hurts, pains, sorrows, several failed attempts at recovery, and long periods of separation from my family. This life of disaster and destruction started out as a ten year old boy sneaking around the house smoking a cigarette. My adolescent years transformed into alcohol and marijuana abuse. This started my problems with addiction. I had a wonderful opportunity to further my baseball career into college but my senior year I made the choice of cocaine rather than baseball. This devastated my parents, brothers, and whole student body. The only positive aspect of high school for me was meeting the girl I now call my wife. I managed to graduate in1986 and Kim and I were married in 1988. She didn't know of the baggage I had coming into the marriage.

For the next decade I managed to barely keep my head above the water in a sea of addiction. During this time my first two children were born. That's when I came out of the false reality I was in and noticed I had a real problem. This was the first attempt at recovery.

In 1999, I was introduced to a brand new lifestyle of addiction through crack cocaine. This started a downward spiral into the deep dark depths of my very own hell; crack addiction. This terrible drug was like a magnet drawing me away from everything I cared about. Any values, morals or integrity I had left was quickly snatched away for just one more hit. Within a few short months I was stealing from my wife, kids, parents, brothers, and anyone who came into my destructive path. I remember receiving phone calls from my wife frantically crying, begging me to bring back what I had taken.

My addiction also had me stealing from different drug dealers, which at the time I thought of as a game. One night at about 2 a.m., while I was riding through the area where I acquired drugs, I was lured into a dead end. When they approached my van, I made a request for the drugs. While he was pulling the drugs out, I noticed the barrel of a pistol. I suddenly put my van into reverse and made a hasty retreat. I heard two loud gun shots. When I got back to my driveway I inspected my clothes to see if I was bleeding, but through God's grace I found nothing. I saw one bullet hole in my windshield and another in the cage behind the driver's seat.

My wife and kids finally left me and moved to Wake Forest. Within seven months I had lost everything. I eventually manipulated my way back into the family. Three years later, we built our dream home. Finally, I felt our life was coming together.

There was a stump on a hill overlooking my house where I would go sometimes to clear my head. I shed many tears sitting on that stump. The family was again tore apart by my drug use. I was on the outside looking in. I watched my family continuing life without me. At this point I had no one but myself, and I couldn't even handle that responsibility. I had to get real help.

I went to Teen Challenge. Upon arrival, I called my wife and asked her if she would ship my things to Teen Challenge. That Friday she showed up and I thought she was coming to get our divorce papers finalized. I was surprised to see my things in her hands. She said she wanted to bring the children to see me, but that would be all our relationship would consist of. I told her about the marriage restoration plan offered at Teen Challenge. She was hesitant, but agreed to enroll in it with me. Kim and I became closer than we ever had been before. In our last session of marriage restoration she put a wedding band back on my finger.

Today, my family sees me as a father figure and a faithful husband. God has restored all I have lost and given me so much more. In conclusion, Teen challenge has taken me out of the depths of addiction and placed me into the hands of Jesus Christ.

2 Samuel 22:17- 18 "He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. He delivered me from my powerful enemies from those who hated me and were too strong for me."

CHRIS EDWARDS TODAY

Today, Chris works on staff at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Chris has been with us since his graduation one year ago. He serves as a dorm staff member and our kitchen supervisor. Chris is also a dynamic evangelist and choir director.

God has taken the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. The world would have never believed this crack addict could become such a strong leader and spiritual example to other young men. God shows Himself strong through our weaknesses.

Chris and his family are a vital part of the ministry here at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. Chris is one example of the results of your donations. When you stand before the Lord, He will say, " I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." That scripture seems unusual in today's world, but what if we read it like this? "I was homeless and you gave me a meal, I was sick and you took me to the doctor, I was an addict living in hopelessness and you drove me to Teen Challenge. "

Thank you for giving to Teen Challenge. Please include us in your 2011 giving budget, so we can continue the ministry of rescuing men from the grips of addictions. Thank you and God bless you.

Director's Corner......Another Resolution

A Message from Dr. Bob......

January usually causes many of us to start thinking of New Year resolutions. Promising ourselves we will do better in a particular area of our life. Webster describes resolute as: "firmly determined in purpose". Some of our most familiar resolutions are: "I will lose weight, I will quit smoking, I will spend more time with my family, I will spend less and get out of debt, I will be nicer, I won't spend so much time at work, I will not fight with my spouse (as much), I will show more love to my children,"...this list goes on and on.

I began wondering how different our lives would be if we made resolutions like: "I will win at least one more person to Christ, I will give more to missions, I will go on a short-term mission trip, I will become more involved in my church, I will be kinder at work, I will give to those less fortunate than me, I will be more merciful."

When we focus on resolutions which make a difference in the lives of others, I believe we will find a huge difference will take place in our own life.

Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." This tells us if we place God at the center of our New Year's resolution, there is a better chance for success. Make resolutions that will make a difference for eternity and then make Jesus your partner in achieving the goal.

TEEN CHALLENGE VICTORIES

Did you know we serve 35,000 meals a year? Our campus is open 24/7; 365 days a year. Last year, from November 2009 to November 2010, we took 60 men into our program. Twenty-seven of the men graduated.

Our thrift store, Blessingdale's, is a great source of ministry to Teen Challenge and the community. A true blessing to everyone.

It takes approximately $2,000.00 per day to operate Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. We have 11 acres, six buildings, 14 fulltime staff and one part-time staff member. Numerous volunteers and 11 Board Members help keep this ministry alive and well. We appreciate each one of these dedicated individuals.

Our updated website, www.gpteenchallenge.com, allows you to stay aware of what's happening and also enables you to donate on-line. We have a new brochure and now our redesigned newsletter. There is a lot happening. We continue to work, serve, minister and pour out because of the love of Jesus dwelling within us.

Thank you for helping us provide a place of safety and shelter for men to learn and grow in Christ.

Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge Choir........

The Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge Choir is full of praise to the Lord for His deliverance and salvation.

When you have a choir of men who have been set free from such extreme bondage and addiction, they are excited to sing praise to the one who brought them their new freedom, Jesus Christ.

If you would like to have the Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge Choir come and sing in your church or civic group, please give Dr. Bob a call at 336-292-7795 x 301. We can have students share their testimony and the choir will sing. You will be blessed. Revelations 12:11 says, "They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony." We encourage everyone to share their testimony of how God has changed their life.

December Newsletter

New Beginnings

A Modern Day Prodigal

One of my favorite stories in the bible is in Luke 15 when Jesus tells the parable of the prodigal son. Prodigal: recklessly wasteful or a person who wastes his means. This has been the reoccurring theme of my life. You are about to hear how my life directly lines up with this parable and how God has never stopped loving me.

My name is Michael Dunn. I am 25 years old and from a suburb outside of Philadelphia. I have been blessed with a loving family and grew up never knowing what need was. Also, as a child and young adult almost everything that I applied myself to came fairly easy to me. I graduated high school and was headed to Temple University in north Philadelphia.

"...the son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living."(Luke 15:13) Philadelphia was the fast life. I hit college hard with partying. Drinking and women was an everyday event. Then one night my friend introduced me to cocaine after a long night of drinking. It immediately became a necessity to partying. This eventually led to be a necessity to everyday life. I began to use cocaine everyday even if I wasn't drinking. If I didn't use I was completely miserable. This was a four year affair.

The continued drug use had me at an all time low. I was completely depressed and had no will or desire to live. There seemed to be no way out and no hope. When things couldn't get any worse Satan had one more poison dart for me. This dart was named heroin. I knew deep down in my heart that this would be my demise but part of me told me I could handle it and another part of me didn't care what would happen.

"He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything."(Luke 15:16) Two overdoses coupled with tremendous pain and suffering to me and my family and being mentally, physically, and financially bankrupt I had finally had enough. The bottom which my addiction led me to was sleeping on the street and digging in dumpsters and begging for food. I was tired and had nowhere to turn except to God.

I have tried to do everything to stop using. I have tried outpatient rehabs and inpatient rehabs. I have done detox and suboxone. I have also tried methadone. Finally, I attempted 12 step programs all which led me to no success. The problem was I was relying on myself and man to get me off the drugs.

My entire life I never believed in God and really didn't have any desire to change that. The end of January I was beat down so bad that the only option I had was to cry out to God. I left everything I have ever known including all of my family to give my full and undivided attention to God. I turned my life over to Jesus Christ and immediately God began doing great works in my life.

I came to North Carolina with a bag of clothes and a hope that God would change my life. I am leaving Teen Challenge with my health, nicer clothes than I came with and a complete trust in God. I wanted and prayed for a guitar and the Lord blessed me with two guitars. He also gave me the ability to learn quickly and write my own songs. I hope to start a band with people who love God and music as much as I do. I prayed to go back to college. While at Teen Challenge I was accepted into Greensboro College . Finally, the many years of pain and distance I put between me and my family has been mended in a way that I could never imagine. For the first time ever I can tell my father that I love him and not feel uncomfortable. I can also finally say that I love myself more each day with God's help.

The parable ends with a verse that I hold close to my heart. "But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."(Luke 15:32) I am finally found and for once I am alive.

Director's Corner..........

Rolling onto the Teen Challenge Campus riding my Harley Davidson brings lots of smiles to the faces of our students and staff. I have loved riding motorcycles as long as I can remember. I have been blessed to be able to ride. There are times when I need to clear my head or just be alone with the Lord and I will hop on my bike and ride through the country side. I find it refreshing and rejuvenating.

Sharing the refreshing and rejuvenating love of Christ is my call. I have been blessed to lead mission trips into developing countries for over 17 years. It has been a blessing to bring hope and healing to those who are so desperately in need of help and a savior.

On November 1st, of this year, I took the position as the new Executive Director for Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. I plan to work with the other great staff here, to bring hope and healing to young men right in our own area.

God is no respecter of persons. He doesn’t see us as rich or poor, He doesn’t see our color, He doesn’t see our physical appearance, He doesn’t see what part of the country we are from……..He sees our heart. As long as He gives me breath, I will share His love and deliverance with those around me.

Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge has been able to bring hope and healing to hundreds of young men during the past 35 years. We want to continue seeing men set free by the power of Christ.

Christmas Blessing......

There is a saying I have come to love, it goes like this: “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” That’s why God gave the ultimate gift of His only son. It was love.

In the devotional book, Grace for the Moment, by Max Lucado, in relation to gifts, the question is asked, Why do you? I’ve seen you searching for a gift. I’ve seen you stalking the malls and walking the aisles. I’m not talking about the obligatory gifts...Why do you do it?...You do it so the heart will stop. You do it so the jaw will drop. You do it to hear those words of disbelief, “You did this for me?”

That’s why you do it. And that is why God did it. Next time a sunrise steals your breath or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless, remain that way. Say nothing and listen as heaven whispers, ‘”You like it? I did it just for you.”

When you are quiet before the Lord and totally overwhelmed by His love and the gift of His son, remember He did it just for you. God gave His son for each of us and yet He gave His Son just for you. That kind of love is truly beyond our human comprehension. The simple verse, John 3:16, “God gave.” and 2 Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be to God for His gift that is too wonderful for words.

Take time this Christmas to enjoy your gift!

Marriage Vows Renewed.....

Alumni, Tommy McCalvin and wife Heather renewed their marriage vows in the Teen Challenge Chapel this November. It was a great time of rejoicing as we witnessed a home that God restored through the Marriage and Restoration Program here at Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge.

A time of fellowship and eating followed in the dining hall. It was a wonderful opportunity to witness God's healing and grace.

Tommy and Heather informed family and friends that from now on they will celebrate their anniversary on November 15th.

To God Be the Glory, Great Things He Hath Done!

Fall Walkathon a Success.............

Each Spring and Fall we have a walk-a-thon. The men look forward to this time of being part of a fund raiser for Greater Piedmont Teen Challenge. It blesses me to see them want to give back to Teen Challenge.

The men in the photo below were our walkers. Many of you gave to the Fall Walk-a-thon. If you have not yet sent in your pledge, it's not too late. Mark the memo line of your check Walk-a-thon.

Thanks to all who sent in pledges and all who have kept us in your prayers. This is a partnership ministry. Thank you for being our partners. Together, we will see many men rescued and homes restored.
